Spoke to someone recently about having a Web site developed in order to sell my photos and almost lost consciousness when he told me what it would cost and that I would have very limited access to maintaining my own site.  Any ideas how I can have my pictures on a professional looking web page and still maintain some control of my own site?  Something an average person just starting out could afford?

Hi Greg!

I’m a freelance web developer, graphic designer located in Australia, and I think, I know a solution to your problem. Please check out my web site and the work I have done before.

I just completed a web site for a Californian wedding photographer and also made sites for fine art photographers as well as for an entertainment company located in Florida.  My prices are very reasonable and I could get you online within 2 weeks.

My web site address is: http://www.envisage.com.au.ms/

My contact email address is: envisagewebdesign@yahoo.com.au

The web site I developed recently at: http://www.limagephotography.com/

I’m looking forward to hear from you and I’m sure, you won’t be disappointed, if you choose to develop your site with me.

Regards,

Beatrix

Greg - its not clear from your post exactly what you want to sell - prints or images for stock use or both or other products such as screensavers etc. But i'll have go at the options for the first few.

Stock Photography doesn't really need you to have a website - you can submit your images directly to stock photography sites such as Alamy - you sometimes need to submit portfolio of say 20 images then they assess how commercial and whether they meet their quality standards and then if you get the green light you can give them as many as you can provide - they take a cut of course.

Selling Prints also doesn't require a website there are some websites which allow you to put a portfolio online and sell from there - there was a recent post in our cool sites
forum http://forums.photographysites.com/forum6/57.html which mentioned a site where you can do this - there are numerous other sites like this maybe some other people can recommend ones they have experience with.

These options are good a good way to get some feed back on how well your images may sell without going to the effort of creating a website.

Websites - if you want to get a site - you can build it yourself - buy a domain name from somewhere like godaddy.com - find a hosting company - try hostgator.com - hostdime.com - 2 companies i have had good experiences with - and setup your site - many hosts have a package called Fantastico which will automatically setup scripts for a range of shopping carts, weblogs, forums, photo gallery scripts.

there can be a reasonable learning curve for getting these scripts to look the way you want - but thats half the fun - there are premade website templates which can give you a very professional look http://allwebcodesign.com/setup/

other self made options which blend with your work flow http://www.breezesys.com software for cataloging and handling digital files can create web templates which you can upload to a site. And one user Peter Berger has made templates which integrate and add a shopping cart - very cool http://www.eostemplate.com/eos/index.html

ACDSee also creates albums which you can upload - the ad in the left hand column (plug plug) :D

check out http://www.anthonyroach.com as an example of someone who does it all himself.

or you can try a web designer as Beatrix has suggested but also check http://forums.photographysites.com/forum4/38.html

he had made some very nice sites - but look around check out their prices and make sure you like their portfolio and that their portfolio includes photography sites - site hosting and maintenance are issues you must think about.

finally if you build it will they come - check the "getting Traffic Forum" http://forums.photographysites.com/forum3/ for tips on how to actually get people to your site.

Hope this helps - Tony

Setting up a website isn't terribly hard. I think it's worth everyone's effort to learn how to set one up! Then, you can truely represent your work as you see fit. Like all things, it only takes time.
