The best setting on d40 for action sports.

I have a d40 camera with three lens from standard to a 300 zoom. I take alot of motocross pics and im looking at local football games as well. what and how would i set this camera up for these pictures. FRom time to time it seems the camera has a mins of its own and takes nothing but blurred pics on the action mode.

May be with the passage of time your camera loose real duty of lens?
